Worship

Sunday Worship Services, 10:00 a.m.

Worship is the center of our community's life. It's a time to recenter ourselves on what is most important in life - creating community, acts of service, making friends, deepening faith, finding meaning in life.

We follow a somewhat traditional order of service as each part of the worship service shapes us in some particular way. The Christian faith is a powerfully beautiful way of living in the world. The weekly worship service trains us to do so by embodying these elements. Sometimes worship pushes and provokes us. It comforts and even challenges us. The goal for us is all to become more Christ-like, to 'live the love and justice of Jesus.'

We pray for ourselves, for others, and for our world.

We share in the healing sacrament of Communion.

We wrestle with the amazing stories of the faith.

We proclaim hope, grace, and inspiration in our preaching.

We sing the great hymns of the faith and new ones of today.

We give in gratitude for what we have received.

We receive the blessing of God before we depart for the week.

Every church has different skills and gifts, but Second Church has always been know for thoughtful preaching, powerful music, and loving community.

We practice an 'Open Table' which means that Communion, which we celebrate on the first Sunday of the month, is open to all. Just as Christ welcomed all people, so do we. Some Christian traditions practice a 'closed table' because they want to ensure that everyone believes the same things in the same way. Yet an Open Table allows people to experience God's presence in their lives in ways that are meaningful to them. We come forward to receive the elements by intinction. You take a piece of bread, dip it in the grape juice, and consume it prayerfully.

Every Sunday, from September to June, we gather in our Fellowship Hall for Coffee Hour after worship. It's a great time to catch up with folks, make new friends, and enjoy being in community.

If you are traveling, you can live-stream the service on YouTube or tune in later on to stay up with the sermon series. The link to our YouTube page is here. We eventually edit the services and place the sermon or special music in separate playlists.

Summer Mode: Every year, following Father's Day, we move down to Fellowship Hall for 9:00 a.m. Coffee Hour and 9:30 worship. This is smaller, more intimate, creative, and casual worship service is a nice change. In the summer, our Music Director and Choir have time off and general programming stops as we prepare for the Fall. Summer worship is always a mixed bag, with different leaders doing different things.
