Second Church in Newton is affiliated with The United Church of Christ (UCC). The UCC is a progressive Protestant denomination with over 5,000 churches throughout the United States. A denomination is a simply a group of like-minded or like-organized churches.
Second Church is rooted in the Congregational stream of the UCC, which dates back to the time of the Pilgrims and Puritans. We're not some fly-by-night church. We have deep historic roots and traditions that anchor us in our modern ministry context.

We have 'local church autonomy' which means the entire congregation is the ultimate leader, much like democracy. We receive no external financial support just as there is no external authority over us. To balance this individual church autonomy, we agree to live and work in covenant partnerships with the other UCC churches.
Because the UCC does not require uniformity of belief, Second Church has become a safe haven for people leaving evangelical churches, former Catholics, people in interfaith relationships, and the 'spiritual but not religious' crowd who love Jesus but have some issues with how Christianity is sometimes practiced.
Members at Second Church are invited and encouraged to share, explore, learn, and grow in the faith. Some times we agree on things. Other times we disagree. Yet, together we wrestle with life’s biggest questions in a true spirit of love and community.
