The Second Church in Newton

Adult Education
Relax: there aren't any tests. These are just lively opportunities to explore, discuss, and practice matters of faith. Generally, we do a few kinds of classes/groups/events through the year.

1. A Bible Study is just that - a time to actually read the Bible. Why would you want to do that? The Bible, like it or not, is the foundation of the faith. Since it's the most quoted book that people have never read, lots of people find it deeply meaningful to understand what the life if Jesus is actually about. [Hint: it's almost always not what they have been told.] Sometimes we focus on a single book, a topic like 'great leaders of the faith,' or a theological concept like 'forgiveness.' Rev. Corey is a great teacher and helpful guide to help us make our way through these ancient texts.
2. A Book Group is also just a time for people to discuss a book on faith, religion, or spirituality. These come in all shapes and sizes - from from full books to short articles. Sometimes this is paired with a Sermon Series.
3. Faith and Film. More and more we have been watching a DVD series or going to the movies and then talking about the spiritual themes.
4. We usually do some kind of Devotional Series during Lent and Advent. We sometimes collaborate and partner with our neighboring churches.
5. Contemporary Issues Class. These are times, usually after church and coffee hour, to to share how our faith intersects with the most important issues of the day - LGBTQ+ rights, immigration, war, poverty, reproductive rights, etc. We may read an article, bring in a a speaker, or watch a short film.

We are proud members of NILA - the Newton Interfaith Leaders Association. We get to partner with other faiths and traditions in powerful ways.

We have a Youth Group for High School age kids with another local church.
