Progressive Christianity
At Second Church, we don't care much for labels. The words 'liberal' and 'conservative' are political descriptions that have been imported into the religious sphere. While most people generally grasp what these terms mean, the entirety of the Christian faith isn't built upon one's views on abortion and gay marriage.

There are many different ways to be faithful. At Second Church, we believe in valuing the diversity of faith expressions while stressing the places of unity among Christians. Some of us grew up evangelical and others agnostic. Some grew up Catholic or Episcopal, while others Quaker or Moravian. What makes Second Church a truly special place is that we value, embrace, and create space for the diversity of faith expressions within the Christian traditions even as we hold to the larger unity. We often say, 'We're not all called to think alike, but we are called to love alike.'

That being said, Second Church can be considered a 'Progressive Christian' church. We accept human diversity and respect human rights. We believe it's okay and even good to question traditions. We are committed to social justice for the poor, oppressed, and marginalized. We believe in the environmental stewardship of the earth. Our faith calls us to love God and love our neighbors.

The United Church of Christ is the most progressive Christian Protestant denomination. You can see a timeline of our historic 'firsts' on our denomination's website here.
