The Second Church in Newton
a United Church of Christ Congregation in West Newton, Massachusetts
Music plays an important role in the life and development of peoples' faith. Music in a church worship service is not for entertainment, but spiritual edification. Like most churches, we have had a steady stream of classical music through the years. With our new Music Director, Sarah, we have been expanding the musical expression of our faith to speak to a wider number of people
Many Sundays we have a Church Choir that sings a piece of music during the worship service. A church choir is one way the people of the church can actively contribute to the worship experience. Our choir features a whole range of skills and gifts - from people who sing often with other professional choirs to people who like to sing in the car and are just starting out. This is a safe, non-judgmental, and non-threatening way to sing and share your gifts.
We sometimes have an 'Americana' Band (Folk, Blues, Bluegrass, Country, Gospel, etc.) to play a spiritual song during worship. It might be Johnny Cash or Hank Williams song, an African-American Spiritual or Gospel song, an old time hymn.
We also have a number of guest musicians who join us for special Sundays like, Thanksgiving, Advent (the four Sundays leading up to Christmas Eve), Christmas Eve, Easter Sunday, etc. They may play harp or trumpet, violin or flute. We experiment with different arrangements since there are so many great musicians in our area.
Every fourth Sunday of the month is 'Family Singers.' Here's how it works. People arrive at 9:00 a.m., learn a simple musical piece, and then sing during the 10:00 a.m. worship service. It might be a song, a hymn arrangement, a simple meditative chant. This is a great way to get your feet wet if you like music.
We have also begun having a one-time pickup choir to go Christmas caroling at the local care facilities ad for other events.
Our music director, Sarah, is gifted at teaching people and being encouraging even as she pushes people to do a great job. Drop her a line if you are interested or have questions. She would love to hear of your musical gifts and interests.
