Our online community directory is a great tool for getting in touch with Second Church folks. The information is only available to those in the Second Church community who have submitted their email address.
And you can also use the free Instant Church Directory app on your smartphone! You then have everyone’s contact info without adding them individually to your phone contacts–just click a phone number in the app to call someone.

To download the app to a smartphone, go to the App Store (for Apple) or Google Play (for Android), search for “Instant Church Directory” and download the app.
If you don’t have a smartphone you can still access the info on the web at https://members.instantchurchdirectory.com/. If you don’t use a computer, you can still get a paper copy from the church office.
The directory is secure. Folks can only see the directory if 1) their email has been entered into the directory by the administrator and 2) if they have created a private password. Click here to see the privacy policy for the software we are using.

IT WAS A GRAND PARTY! Planning for the 100th anniversary of our Second Church building on Highland Street began in the spring of 2016. An Anniversary Celebration presented an opportunity to invite our neighbors in and to rededicate the mission and ministry of Second Church.
On October 2, we began the celebration with a worship service planned and led by Pastor Mark Seifried and Minister of Music, Andrus Madsen. The worship was based on the 1916 Dedication Service. A proclamation from the City of Newton was read. Pastor Mark preached on the theme “Not to be Ministered Unto, but to Minister” which encouraged us to remember that Second Church was not created to be a shrine or museum, but rather to be a “healing balm for a wounded world”.
A luncheon for approximately 100 people followed the worship service. Luncheon guests were encouraged to record memories on paper models of our church. Over $350 was received in donations for the Newton Food Pantry.
The afternoon “Neighborhood Party” began at 2:00 with a brass band overture. Fellowship Hall was gaily decorated, and activities included children’s games, cake and ice cream. There were displays from organizations that our Mission dollars support. Tours of the Sanctuary were held upstairs. Approximately ten trained tour guides helped folks to examine windows, carvings and details of architecture and learn a bit of the history of Second Church.
The celebration continued on November 5, when approximately 80 people attended a party celebrating the many ministries of the tenants of our building. Representatives from Clearway School, Dorshei Tzedek, the Second Church Nursery School and Al-Anon talked of their important work in our community.
Joy Paine organized a display of Second Church memorabilia which was shown in the Newton Public Library during December. Shirley Taylor prepared an Anniversary Visitors’ Guide commemorative booklet; proceeds from the sale of the booklet helped to defray the costs of the celebration. Second Church will be featured on a Historic Newton walking tour planned for the spring.
